Scenarios: Futures of Food and Drink

Trending scenarios are vignettes of the future crafted from themed news articles (scanhits) sourced by our Foresight Club community.

Friday morning has come around, and Kaya has a busy day ahead of her. She wakes up early and gets ready, but she's not going to have much time to make breakfast. That's okay, though. She just got her new order of breakfast pills - all of the vitamins and nutrients she'll need, customized to her personal health profile, packed into a quick and easy pill.

Kaya's morning is packed with meetings, and in her haste to get out of the house, she forgot to pack anything for lunch. By the time her lunch break rolls around, she's been daydreaming of a delicious, greasy cheeseburger and fries. It's a Friday, so she decides to treat herself to a fast food lunch. As she pulls into the drive-through, the AI in the ordering window recognizes her car and displays a few of her most frequently ordered meals, as well as a few new items it thinks she might like.

After her workday ends, Kaya heads home to get ready for dinner with her mother. It's been a while since the last time they were able to get together, so Kaya wants to cook something at home rather than going out to eat. She fires up her 3D printer, and starts on the rest of her meal prep as it gets to work printing some fresh fish fillets.

The food is just about finished when Kaya's mom knocks on the door.

"I brought drinks," she says, holding up a drink carrier. "I thought you might like to try some of these new beers - they're made with zero carbon emissions."

"What about you, though, Mom?" Kaya asks, knowing that her mother prefers slightly different flavors in her drinks.

"Not to worry, I brought a few drinks of my own. They're made especially for old folks like me," Kaya's mother winks, and the two women take a moment to laugh.

Kaya pours the drinks into fresh glasses and sets the table. She has a wonderful meal with her mother that night, and goes to bed feeling full and happy.

From our Shelves: Thriving on Disruption Vol. 4

Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with writer and foresight professional Roger Spitz about the release of his latest book, Thriving on Disruption: Volume 4, which quickly climbed the Amazon bestseller lists in multiple categories.

Spitz takes a very neutral stance on disruption as a whole, claiming that it is neither positive or negative, but depends entirely on how it is perceived and prepared for. Disruption, he believes, is much broader than simply technology or innovation. It's systemic.

Volume 4 is the final book in Spitz's Thriving on Disruption series, but that doesn't mean he's done creating content in the genre. He already has plans for a podcast, as well as a potential shorter handbook for disruption.

Most of all, Spitz wants to emphasize the importance of agency. Nothing is predetermined, he believes, and we all have a say in shaping the future.

For more information, check out the articles here and here. The entire 4-book series is available for purchase on Amazon.
